Note: In this document, the word label refers to all marking methods and technologies (including all methods in Appendix L). Note: All label samples and examples used in this document are for demonstration purposes only.
Purpose. This standard defines the barcode symbologies, data content, and label/Direct Part Marking (DPM) layout for parts, components, assemblies, and modules used in the manufacturing of GM vehicles. This standard also defines the performance standards for printed barcodes and Direct Part Marking, as well as the standards to be used for Ultra High Frequency (UHF)-Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) (UHF-RFID) tagged parts.
Applicability. All parts, components, assemblies, or modules with Key Characteristics Designation System (KCDS) codes Traceability (TRA), Assembly Verification Group (AVG) and/or Verification (VER) shall comply with this document. It is the supplier’s responsibility to ensure all components outsourced to or purchased from sub suppliers that contain KCDS codes of TRA, AVG, and/or VER also comply with this document. This standard does not apply to packaging labels or service parts labels.

New Sourced Parts, Components, Assemblies, and Modules. All parts, components, assemblies, or modules with KCDS codes TRA, AVG and/or VER shall comply with this document. It is the supplier’s responsibility to ensure all components outsourced to or purchased from sub suppliers that contain KCDS codes of TRA, AVG, and/or VER also comply with this document. When scanning is used for Compliance Confirmation (COM) components or assemblies, see Section 4 Single Data Field Encodation, as single field encodation shall apply.
Carryover Parts, Components, Assemblies, and Modules. Linear One-dimensional (1D) Barcode formats, formerly defined in GM1737, are only allowed on carryover scanned parts, components, assemblies or modules upon CG2503 deviation approval, except as noted in 1.6. See Notice of Action (NOA) GPD0-196B for additional information. See Appendix H for Linear Barcode reference information.
Control Module Software. Control Module Software shall comply with GMW4710. New data structure shall go into effect beginning with Global B Architecture or upon new part sourcing. 1.7 Additional Label Content. This specification defines only Trace/error-proofing requirements for labels and Direct Part Marking (DPM). General Motors MAY allow additional information on the label/DPM under the following conditions:
Complies with all applicable GMWs and regulations.
Visually it is separated/distinct from traceability/error-proofing content.
Does NOT contain additional barcodes (only GM-required barcode is allowed unless others are required by law).
Does NOT interfere with barcode scannability.
Agreed to by General Motors via the CG2503 Bar Code Validation Form approval process.
Reasons for Barcode Scanning.
Traceability. Traceability refers to all categories of GM defined component tracking that require barcodes (i.e., includes TRA, AVG and/or VER). The primary purpose of traceability is to precisely identify the vehicles (Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)/trace number) involved in a spill or potential field action. Product Engineering is responsible for defining which parts, components, assemblies, and modules require traceability.
Error-Proofing. Error-proofing provides the capability to validate the correct part/component/module/assembly has been installed on the vehicle.
